Killer Tomatoes

Killer Tomatoes is a concept illustration intended for use on a toy package. This was an extremely fun illustration to produce with freehand airbrushing effects. My favorite was a spatter and bleed technique for the tongue on the tomato in the foreground. Certain brands and colors of paint carry the perfect viscosity for this effect. Badger Crimson is one of them.

Pool Shark

Jeff: “Pool Shark” is a private commission, illustrated in acrylic paint on hot press illustration board. It sits in a private residence in California in a game room on a wall next to a billiards table. Most of the illustration is a thin layer of transparent paint over white board, producing all the various shades and colors of the shark, balls, felt, and background in the illustration.

San Jose Rhino

This San Jose Rhino mascot illustration was commissioned by The San Jose Rhinos roller hockey team for their kick-off season. Terry Smith Creations provided art direction and props (roller hockey skates, uniforms, pucks, and sticks). The illustration was produced using the live props for logo and textural reference and rendered into the final illustration with acrylic paint on hot press illustration board. The end products were printed flyers and a 17″ x 24″ poster.

Second Life Book Cover Illustration

Second Life Book Cover Illustration

Jeff: This Illustration appears on the “How to Do Everything with Second Life” book, published through McGraw-Hill. The full illustration, seen here, was cropped and redesigned for the book cover to accommodate space restrictions. The concept was to depict the surreal and adventurous environment often encountered in Second Life, where “virtually” anything is possible. The figures and foreground in the illustration are captured at high resolution out of the Second Life virtual world environment and layered together digitally in Photoshop with effects to enhance the scene. Many of the textural elements on the figures, including the hat and skins were created by yours truly under the Second Skin Labs brand name in Second Life. The pose on the robot is a tribute to Michael Whelan’s famous “Robots of Dawn” illustration seen on the cover of Issac Asimov’s like named book.
